Padikkal and Sarfaraz came in when India were in a spot of bother with India losing Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill just after the lunch break after a strong start to the day.

The young duo started off a bit tentatively but quickly put the pressure back on the England bowling with their 97-run stand to help the hosts take back control of proceedings.

Both men scored fifties as well before departing the field, with Sarfaraz getting 56 off 58 balls and Padikkal hitting 65 off 103 deliveries.

Speaking at the press conference in Dharamsala, Padikkal said it is always fun to bat alongside Sarfaraz. The debutant said the Mumbai batter is a character and both men kept things light in the middle.

“Always fun to bat with Sarfaraz Khan. He is a character, we just kept it light and made each other comfortable,” said Padikkal.

Padikkal also had an interesting choice when it came to the boundary he enjoyed the most. The southpaw got off the mark with an outside edge to the boundary and said he enjoyed it the most as it was his first Test runs.

“My first boundary off the edge was most enjoyable because those were my first Test runs,” said Padikkal.

Padikkal’s Test debut came after a phenomenal run in first-class cricket this year and the youngster admitted that runs does give him confidence. The southpaw said he wasn’t having a great time in the domestic circuit for sometime and is still learning and making adjustments.

“Runs give you confidence. I wasn’t doing well in First Class for first couple of years. I am still learning and still making adjustments,” said Padikkal.

The partnership from Padikkal and Sarfaraz helped India to go past the 400-run mark and despite losing some wickets in a flurry, the tail has been piling on the runs.
