Coach Rahul Dravid’s contract expires, BCCI yet to make call on his future

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is yet to begin talks over the future of head coach Rahul Dravid after his two-year tenure came to an end following the World Cup 2023 Final. Dravid took over the team in 2021 on a two-year tenure with the 50-over World Cup being his biggest assignment.

India were ruthless in the World Cup until Sunday, winning 10 on the trot. However, Rohit Sharma’s men faltered at the final hurdle, losing to Australia in a one-sided final in Ahmedabad.

The BCCI had picked Rahul Dravid as the head coach, giving him two years’ time to prepare the team for as many as 3 major competitions, including the T20 World Cup last year and the ICC World Test Championship final.

As of now, there is no word from the BCCI about whether Rahul Dravid will continue or not with the team for the next assignment, which is next year’s T20 World Cup in June. A source told India Today that the board will take a call in the near future but there is no talk about it at the moment.

India are next playing Australia in a 5-match T20I series from Thursday, November 23, after which the team will embark on a full-length tour of South Africa that will include 3 T20is, as many ODIs, and 2 Tests from December 10 to January 7.

Dravid addressed questions about his future after India lost the World Cup Final in Ahmedabad, saying he has not had enough time to think about anything but the campaign in the tournament.

“I haven’t thought about it. Again, I’ve just come off a game. I have no time to think about this and no time to reflect on this. Yeah, I will when I get the time to do that. But at this point of time, I was completely focused on this campaign. It was focused on this World Cup, and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven’t given any other thought to what happens in the future,” Rahul Dravid said.

Inida have played some terrific cricket under the guidance of coach Dravid. They ended their drought for a major title by winning the Asia Cup earlier this year. However, India lost in the semi-final of T20 World Cup last year and the final of the World Test Championship and the World Cup.
