India lost their final Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Bangladesh. India, the only unbeaten team so far in the tournament, were defeated by Shakib Al Hasan’s men in Colombo on Friday.
Rohit Sharma’s team failed to chase down a target of 260 runs in a slow pitch at the R Premadasa Stadium on Friday and fell short of the target by 6 runs.
India batter Shubman Gill scored a fantastic century and anchored the side for the majority of the chase. Gill got out in the 44th over of the match trying to hit Mahedi Hasan for a six over long off. Gill mistimed the ball and the looping catch went into the hands of Towhid Hridoy who took a calm and collected catch, running to his right.
Gill spoke after the match and said that he had terribly miscalculated the number of overs he had left with him and said that he should have finished the match.
“When I was batting and when I got out actually, there’s so much adrenaline when you are batting, sometimes you miscalculate. I think that was a miscalculation on my side. When you get out and then you see that there was a lot of time left and if I would have batted a bit normally or not that aggressively, we should have been able to get over the line. Fortunately, this game was not the final for us and these are the learnings you take as a batter in the game,” said Shubman Gill in the press conference after the match.
The batter was asked why the India pacers like Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were rested for the final Super 4 match. Gill replied that the pacers had played in three straight match days and needed to remain fresh for the final match, set to be played against Sri Lanka on Sunday, 17 September.
“Bowlers were rested to keep them fresh ahead of the final match,” Gill explained after the match.
Gill rued the fact that he could not finish the match and said that Indian team was trying to fix the problem of chasing down this tricky total.
“I should have finished the game,” rued Shubman Gill during the press conference.
