Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif highlighted the importance of MS Dhoni in the Chennai Super Kings camp, saying the ‘Captain Cool’ is no longer playing as a player but as a mentor.

Dhoni once again kept everyone guessing about his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). When he was asked about his retirement during the toss against LSG, Dhoni told commentator Danny Morrison that he never commented on whether or not IPL 2023 would be his last season.

“You’ve decided it is my last,” Dhoni replied with a smile to Morrison’s question at the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium on May 3. The match between LSG and CSK had no result as it was called off due to persistent rains in Lucknow.

Kaif pointed out that Dhoni has been teaching the youngsters all the time as he wants every player to perform well under his guidance.

“Mahi is no longer playing as a player but as a mentor. He chooses the team. Let’s get on the field. He does not tease the seniors much but keeps on teaching the youth all the time. He wants every player, playing under him, to perform well as it will make the team’s job easier,” Kaif said on Star Sports’ Cricket Live.

Meanwhile, Dhoni’s former CSK and India teammate Harbhajan Singh said that only Dhoni knows when he will retire. Harbhajan added that Dhoni’s fans would be happy if he plays in the next IPL season as well.

“Only MS Dhoni knows when Dhoni will retire. I said last year that will play this year. I don’t know if he will play next year as well. Yes, if he plays next year, the fans will be happy to see him playing. Fans have always wanted to see him playing,” Harbhajan said on Star Sports.

Earlier, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said that Dhoni had not spoken to him about retirement at all in the ongoing IPL 2023.
