Tried to be as positive as we could, says Travis Head on tough pitch to bat at Gabba

Left-handed batter Travis Head said that the pitch at the Gabba in Brisbane was a tough one to bat after Day 1 of the opening Test between South Africa and Australia.

At Stumps on the first day, Australia, captained by Pat Cummins, were trailing by seven runs with five wickets left in their first innings.

After bowling the Proteas out for 152 in 48.2 overs, the Aussies lost three early wickets of David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne. However, Head stayed unbeaten on 78 runs off 77 balls with 13 fours and one six.

“It was an entertaining day of cricket. We fought hard, lost a couple of wickets at the end, but we will take that on a very tough wicket,” Head was quoted as saying at the end of the first day’s play.

After Steve Smith got out for 36 to Anrich Nortje, Scott Boland came out as a night-watchman, but Kagiso Rabada accounted for his wicket. Once Boland got out, the curtains came down on the day’s play.

“Get behind the line. We just wanted to make the most of it,” Head said about what he told Boland.

Head mentioned that staying positive on a tricky surface is the way forward for batters to taste success.

“Very tough, a bit up and down. We tried to be as positive as we could, and just hung in. Very important morning tomorrow,” he added.

Head was in impressive form in the series against the West Indies where he got scores of 99, 175 and 38 not out. The left-hander has now carried his form in the series against the Proteas.
