Sports Ministry Appointed Inquiry Committee Questions SLC Bigwigs!

Written by N Krishnamurthy

The questioning of SLC top officials by the Sports Ministry appointed Special Investigation Committee suggests that it has been tasked to eliminate Maitland Place’s some high profile names from contesting the election!

As it was widely expected and rumoured, Sports Ministry appointed 6-members high-level Inquiry Committee, which was originally formed to Investigate Incidents Involving the national team reported during the recently concluded T20 World Cup in Australia, has now started questioning top officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as well.

Cricket Age Exclusively learns that In last few days, some of the top SLC officials like CEO Ashley De Silva, secretary Mohan de Silva and COO Jerome Jayaratne have specifically been questioned as part of Inquiry Committee’s ongoing Investigation!

“Accordingly, today, board treasurer Lasantha Wickramasinghe was questioned by the Inquiry Committee” a high level source told Cricket Age.

Interestingly, the committee, which is headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena and also consists of former Ministry Secretary Kingsley Fernando, Retired DIG Sudath Nagahamulla, Retired Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, former cricketer Nalin de Alwis, and Lawyer Shalini Roshana Fernando as remaining five members, is tasked with investigating the participation and other incidents involving the national cricket team during the ICC T20 World Cup that took place between 16th October to 13th November 2022 in Australia.

The questionnaire sent by committee to SLC, which is under Cricket Age possession, raises some valid points related to players, like – why Danushka Gunathilaka was kept with the team even after sustaining Injury, whether selectors ignored fitness level of players while selecting the squad, how Dhanushka went on to meet girls amidst so much of said security in place and whether selectors have had lined up proper players as replacements in case of injuries.

However, surprisingly, some of the questions are well beyond Committee’s criteria which gives the Indication that not only players, the 6-members committee is tasked to fix the board office bearers as well!

Cricket Age, In last few weeks, has exclusively reported that Sports Ministry is desperately trying to desolve Shammi Silva led administration and appoint an interim committee to run the game in the Island! And, questioning of top officials like Ashley De Silva, Mohan de Silva and Lasantha Wickramasinghe proves that, as per Cricket Age revelations, more than players, Ministry is eying to target SLC top brass! Especially, as It has learned that some of the Inquires of the committee goes well beyond 2017 even, which suggests that not only Incidents related to players, SLC bigwigs are also on Ministry’s radar!
