Legendary all-rounder Imran Khan said that he had asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint Babar Azam as the skipper of the national team across formats. After Pakistan crashed out of the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales, Sarfaraz Ahmed lost the captaincy and his place in the team.
“Our cricket was going through a bad time when I was the Prime Minister. I only watched him play twice and immediately asked the head of the cricket board, you must make him the captain because he is genuinely world-class,” Khan was quoted as saying while speaking to Piers Morgan on his ‘TalkTV’ show.
Khan, who captained Pakistan to glory in the 1992 World Cup, lauded Babar for his versatility, technique and temperament.
“He is exceptional and I haven’t seen a player with such versatility and correct technique, such stroke play and temperament; he could go anywhere from here,” he stated.
“Him as the captain makes a lot of sense because you want your captain to be world-class so that he commands respect,” Khan added.
Pakistan will be looking for their second T20 World Cup title after winning their first 13 years ago, back in 2009.
