Mohammad Nabi, on Friday, November 4, stepped down as the skipper of the Afghanistan T20I team. The Afghans failed to win a single match in the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup 2022, having lost to England, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan came close to beating Australia, but eventually lost by four runs at the Adelaide Oval despite Rashid Khan’s unbeaten 23-ball 48. After the match against the Aussies, Nabi released a statement where he put forth his decision to step down as the Afghan captain.

However, Nabi said that he would continue donning the national colours in the limited-overs format. Nabi’s second stint as Afghanistan captain started from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not us or our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches” he wrote in his statement.

From the last one year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want it or needed for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours, the team management, selection committee and | were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance.

From 2013 to 2015, Nabi captained Afghanistan for the first time. Under his leadership, the Afghans won 13 ODIs and 16 T20Is. As a skipper, the veteran racked up 601 runs from 28 ODIs and 422 runs from 35 T20Is. Nabi also picked up 47 wickets as the captain of the Afghan national team.
