Cricket West Indies chief selector Desmond Haynes explained Andre Russell’s absence from the WI squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, saying that the board was not convinced by the star all-rounder’s form in the shortest format of the game.

West Indies announced a 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, but there was no place for Russell in the Nicholas Pooran-led side. Russell, who is currently playing his trade in the CPL 2022, last played for the West Indies cricket team in the last T20 World Cup. He has been far from impressive during his stint in CPL 2022 so far with Trinbago Knight Riders.

“We had a meeting with Andre Russell earlier in the year,” Haynes said.

“We’re still not convinced yet, he’s not performing as well as we would like to see him in the competition. I think in the situation with Andre Russell, we’ve just decided to move on, and look for someone who’s in form, and doing well in the T20 format.”

“I did not get any notice from Narine regarding his availability to play. There were conversations that the captain [Nicholas Pooran] was having with Narine, and from all reports, it seemed that he was not interested,” Haynes said when he was asked about Narine.
