Dinesh Karthik recalls Rohit Sharma’s struggle in Test cricket: There were many curve balls thrown at him

Current Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s Test career has been a story of success off late, since he started playing as an opener. Things were not always this way as Sharma had to struggle for a prolonged period of time against the red ball, where his talent and result were not on the same page.

Sharma however, had a brilliant start to his Test career, scoring twin centuries in India against West Indies in 2013.

The right-hander score 177 and 111* respectively in back to back Test matches to announce his arrival in red ball cricket. However, once the overseas tours followed, Sharma looked a shadow of the batter that he was in India and had to wait four years for his next century, on that came against Sri Lanka in November, 2017.

Speaking about the struggle that Rohit faced, Indian keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said that the player was thrown a lot of curveballs during that period.

Talking of Rohit’s start to his Test career, Karthik said, “From an Indian perspective, I do not believe there have been many who have started as well as Rohit in Test cricket.

“He got hundreds in his first two matches and then everyone felt this is it he is the big deal, and now that Sachin Tendulkar is retiring from Test cricket, he is the one who is going to answer all those issues for us,” he explained.

“But, as it turns out, life and sport are never exactly what you think they are, and there were many curve balls thrown at Rohit throughout the season, “Karthik said in Cricbuzz’s docu-series Summer Stalemate.
