India vs Sri Lanka: Ravindra Jadeja breaks Kapil Dev’s record with unbeaten 175 in Mohali Test

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja continued his stellar run with the bat as he broke Kapil Dev’s record during his unbeaten 175-run knock against Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the first Test of the 2-match series in Mohali on Saturday.

Notably, Jadeja remained unbeaten on a career-best 175 as India declared their first innings closed on 574 for eight against Sri Lanka. Jadeja crossed Kapil Dev, who had scored 163 against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 1986 while batting at No.7, to hit the highest score by an Indian batter while batting at No.7 or below in Test cricket.

Jadeja is one of the only three batters from the country who have a score of 150 or more while batting at 7 or below in Tests. Before Jadeja, Kapil and Rishabh Pant had reached the landmark. Jadeja also became the first player to be involved in three hundred-plus partnerships in an inning while batting at No.7 or below.

175* is the highest score hit by any Indian batter at Number 7 or below. The southpaw showed a lot of maturity throughout the innings as he played a second fiddle to Rishabh Pant when the wicketkeeper batter was taking on-he opposition bowlers on Day 1. The duo shared a 104-run stand.

Jadeja’s unbeaten 175-run knock was a befitting tribute to Shane Warne, who died on Friday, as the Australian legend had named the India star ‘Rockstar’ in 2008. The morning session belonged to Jadeja as he reached triple figures just prior to lunch, celebrating the milestone in his inimitable sword-play style, regaling the small crowd gathered at the IS Bindra Stadium.
