Sri Lanka pick Uncapped Janith Liyanage, Kamil Mishara, Nuwan Thusara for Zimbabwe ODIs

Uncapped Janith Liyanage, Kamil Mishara, Kalana Perera and Nuwan Thusara have been named in Sri Lanka’ squad for 3 match ODI series against Zimbabwe, Cricket Age exclusively learns.

Wicket keeper batter Minod Bhanuka and leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay have also returned, after being overlooked for the T20 World Cup recently. Two permanent fixtures of the Sri Lanka ODI side, Kusal Perera and Wanindu Hasaranga were not considered for the Zimbabwe series due to injury.

Liyanage, a middle order right hand batter, impressed one and all with his composure and technique during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL). Playing for Dambula Giants, he scored couple of half centuries and won matches on his own.

20 year old Kamil has largely prospered in longer format, but solid defense makes him an useful addition in 50 over matches also.

Thusara earned his place following some sensational performances in the LPL for Galle Gladiators. A bowler with low slingy action, a good slower ball, and able to surprise even set batters, he is invaluable in this format.

The squad, led by Dasun Shanaka, is expected to be announced soon, once Sports Minister approves it.

Three-match ODI series is Sri Lanka’s first international assignment for year 2022, starting in Kandy on 16 January. Zimbabwe are currently ranked 14th as Sri Lanka are in the ninth place, according to present International Cricket Council (ICC) country rankings. The next World Cup of the ODI format is due in India during October-November 2023.
