IPL 2021: We dropped catches at crucial intervals, says Dhoni after MI beat CSK

Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni rued the dropped catches and missed opportunities at crucial junctures after Mumbai Indians rode on a Kieron Pollard special to gun down a record 219-run target and end CSK’s winning run in IPL 2021 on Saturday.

Dhoni asserted that execution was the main difference between the two sides and Chennai bowlers could have fared better if the catches at crucial points were not dropped in Mumbai’s innings. Notably, Faf du Plessis dropped Pollard on 68 and that proved to be the endgame for Chennai Super Kings whose 5-match winning run came to an end.

“I think it was a brilliant wicket and I feel the difference between the two sides was the execution – how off we were. Without being too tough for the bowlers, catches do help. I felt we dropped catches at the crucial point,” MS Dhoni said in the post-match presentation ceremony after the match.

“It doesn’t hurt much when you’re on the top of the table. If you look at how it really went, we were very off-target and against good batters who hit hard, it’s important to execute the plans. Even if you don’t get hit for one or two sixes, in the 20th over that can win you the game,” Dhoni added.

MS Dhoni, one of the sharpest minds in world cricket, brushed aside the points table, saying Chennai look at one game at a time. With the win, Mumbai Indians retained their 4th spot with 8 points from 7 matches while Chennai continued to be at the top of the IPL 2021 points table with 10 points from 7 matches.

“t hurts but the spirits will be up. When you’re under the pump, you learn more. Irrespective of where we are on the points table, we look at one game at a time. Ultimately, if you do that, the points table will take care of itself,” Dhoni further said.
