India captain Virat Kohli became the first cricketer to score 3000 runs in T20 Internationals during the 2nd match of a 5-T20I series against England at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Kohli reached the milestone in the 18th over of the second T20I at Motera. Kohli had scored a duck in the series-opener but roared back to form in the second game during India’s chase of 165.

Virat Kohli averages over 50 in all 3 formats – Tests, ODIs and T20Is. On Friday, before the 1st T20I between India and England, Kohli needed 72 to reach the milestone of 3000 runs in the shortest format in international cricket.

Virat Kohli will soon have company in the elite 3,000-run club in T20Is. New Zealand’s Martin Guptill currently has 2839 runs from 99 T20Is while Rohit Sharma has 2773 runs from 109 matches.

However, Virat Kohli will continue to hold the record for the fastest cricketer to score 3000 T20 International runs for a long time to come. Kohli stormed past 3000 runs in only his 8tth T20I.

Virat Kohli, who debuted for India in August 2008, is 7th on the list of run-scorers in international cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.

Virat Kohli has 7490 runs from 91 Tests and is the 6th highest run-scorer (12040) in ODIs behind Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Ponting, Jayasuriya and Jayawardene. Virat Kohli, with 70 hundreds across formats in international cricket, is third in that list behind Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Ricky Ponting (71).

Incidentally, Virat Kohli is also the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League 5878 runs from 192 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 2016, he smashed all IPL records with 973 runs including 4 hundreds from 16 matches as RCB staged a remarkable recovery to storm into the final against eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad.
