Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has backed Ravichandran Ashwin to become one of the all-time great Indian bowlers and congratulated the off-spinner on completing 400 Test wickets.

Ashwin became the fourth Indian bowler and the second-fastest ever to achieve the feat in the Pink-ball Test against England last week.

“It’s a fabulous effort for Ravi Ashwin to have become the second-fastest bowler to reach 400 Test match wickets.

“He is a very smart bowler, who knows exactly how to get the best out of the conditions that he is given both home and away. He’s got so much variety and so much control to go with it.

“He’s been marvellous in all formats and I suspect he has plenty more in the tank to become one of their all-time great bowlers,” Pietersen said in his Betway Insider blog.

Ashwin has been India’s best bowler in the Test series against England so far with 24 wickets in the 3 matches at 15.70 with two five-wicket hauls. His performances have earned him a nomination in ICC’s list for the Player of the Month in February.

“Scoring a total of 176 runs across these games with taking a total of 24 wickets, Ashwin is the deserving candidate to be nominated in the men’s category for February,” the ICC release stated.

Ashwin is also the only spinner in the top 10 of the Test Bowling Rankings. He jumped 4 spots after the third Test to grab the 3rd spot on the list.
