Shubman Gill to be one of the best Test openers: Brad Hogg

Written by Rohit Pawar

Shubman Gill made his Test debut during the second Test between India and Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. The right-hander made the most of playing his first-ever Test in the Boxing Day encounter to return with scores of 45 and 35 not out as Ajinkya Rahane-led India scripted a famous win to level the series, 1-1, after a humiliating defeat in the four-match Test series opener at Adelaide.

From there on, it was no looking back for Gill who cemented his spot at the top order for the remainder of the two Tests and amassed 259 runs overall, including 2 half-centuries. His 91 on Day 5 of the fourth and final series-deciding Brisbane Test paved the way for India’s epic 2-1 series win and has now shifted his focus towards the four Tests versus England at home. Thus, Gill is being touted to be the next-big-thing for Indian cricket and former spinner Brad Hogg made a bold claim on him recently.

Hogg said on his YouTube channel, “He (Shubman Gill) has got all the shots in the book. The thing that impressed me here in Australia was that when the Australians tested him with the short ball, he was prepared to take on the hook shot. He is going to be a little bit of a legend and he is going to be one of the best openers that the world sees over the next ten years in Test cricket.”

Gill will be eager to remain consistent in his first-ever home Test series when India kick off their campaign versus England, with the first Test from February 05 in Chennai.
