KKR should have changed their captain at the start of IPL 2020: Gambhir

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir on Friday slammed the franchise’s decision to change their team captain from Dinesh Karthik to Eoin Morgan mid-way into the Indian Premier League’s 2020 season.

Karthik led KKR in 7 games this season out of which he won 4 and lost 3 before Morgan took over the reigns. It is being claimed that Karthik relinquished his post to focus on his batting but Gambhir did not buy that argument.

“Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan suffered a crushing defeat in his first match as KKR skipper after failing to defend 148 against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

KKR though, held on to 4th position on the IPL 2020 points table despite the loss. Gambhir however, felt that KKR did not need to change their captain as Karthik was doing a fine job of leading the side.

“Li’ll surprised. He’s obviously leading KKR for the last 2 and a half years. You don’t do it in the middle of the season. KKR is not in that bad a position that someone needs to change a captain, so yeah little bit surprised.
