We believed and became world champions: Ravi Shastri on 1983 World Cup win

As India celebrates the 37th anniversary of the historic Cricket World Cup triumph from 1983, India cricketers from across generations are cheering the game-changing moment in the sport.

On this day in 1983, Kapil Dev-led Indian side outclassed the mighty West Indies in a high-octane final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Kapil’s Devils ended West Indies’ World Cup dominance as the skipper lifted the trophy at the Lord’s balcony — an iconic image that is etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans.

India had played only 40 ODIs in the lead up to the 1983 World Cup and were considered rank outsiders as they won only 1 World Cup match over the previous two editions. However, things changed right from the first match when Kapil’s men defeated the then defending champions to send out a warning notice to the rest of the teams.

Individual brilliance coupled with consistent all-round performances saw India transform from dark horses to jersey winners.

The World Cup triumph inspired millions across the country, including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar who went on to become the torchbearer of Indian cricket for more than 2 decades.

On the 37th anniversary, World Cup 2011 winner Yuvraj Singh took to social media and congratulated his ‘seniors’ who set the benchmark for MS Dhoni’s men to emulate.

“A moment of national pride, our seniors lifted the 1983 Cricket World Cup on this day. Congratulations to every member of the 1983 team. You set the benchmark for us to achieve the same in 2011! Looking forward to India becoming a world champion in all sports,” Yuvraj, who played a key role in India’s World Cup in 2011, said in a social media post.
