No bigger spinner than Ravichandran Ashwin in home conditions: Saqlain Mushtaq

Legendary Pakistan spinner and PCB’s newly-appointed Head of International Player Development Saqlain Mushtaq has rated Ravichandran Ashwin as the most dangerous bowler in home conditions.

Saqlain Mushtaq also rated Australia’s Nathan Lyon as one of the best in the business. Other spinners who got rich praises from the inventor of ‘doosra’ were Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

“Australian spinner Nathan Lyon is giving good performances, He bowled well against England, Pakistan and even India. His strike rate is also good. If we talk about other spinners than there is not a bigger spinner than Ravichandran Ashwin in home conditions. He does well in overseas matches as well but he is the best in home conditions.

“Ravindra Jadeja is also good in Test cricket. If you talk about the shorter version then India’s Kuldeep Yadav is very good. I really like him a lot, he has big heart, I have talked to him on 5-6 occasions. He is a positive character and his very educated in terms of cricketing knowledge,” Saqlain Mushtaq told while talking to Cricket Pakistan.

During the course of the interview Saqlain Mushtaq was asked about the comparisons between Pakistan’s newly-appointed ODI captain Babar Azam and Indian batting ace Virat Kohli. Saqlain Mushtaq opined that it would be wrong to compare the two because Kohli was much more experienced than Babar but added that the “calmness” of Babar Azam gave him an edge over “aggressive Virat Kohli.

“Both are great players, with a great technique, and are mentally very strong. They have the hunger and passion to score lots of runs.

“Kohli is more aggressive while Babar is humble. Babar’s calmness gives him edge over Virat Kohli. If we look at what sports science, it tells us that the aggressive and the clam ones succeed and not those who are in the middle of these two traits. And there will be competition between a hyper and calm character, the calm one will beat the hyper one.

“But comparing Babar with Kohli is unfair because the latter has been performing for a very long time, all over the world. They are both good technically, both are scoring runs, tactically also they are solid. I am not sure about the physical side, Virat Kohli looks strong. Babar is also lean and looks fit but don’t know for how long,” Saqlain Mushtaq added.
