Babar Azam likely to take over as Pakistan’s new ODI captain ahead of Bangladesh series

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is all set to announce the next ODI captain of the Pakistan national team. Babar Azam, who has been Pakistan’s best batsman across formats in the last couple of years, is expected to replace Sarfraz Ahmed as the ODI captain after taking over the leadership duties in T20Is.

As per a report in PTI, Babar is favourite to replace Sarfaraz as the captain in ODIs. Sarfaraz was sacked from captaincy across all three formats and dropped from the Pakistan team after the Men in Green suffered a humiliating T20I series defeat against a second-string Sri Lanka side at home.

Sarfaraz had already been facing the heat after Pakistan’s disastrous World Cup campaign where they failed to qualify for the knockout stages and the loss against Sri Lanka came as the final nail in the coffin for him. He was replaced by Babar as the T20I captain while Azhar Ali was handed over the captaincy in Tests.

However, PCB is yet to name Sarfaraz’s replacement in ODIs ahead of the series against Bangladesh. Pakistan will lock horns with Bangladesh in a one-off ODI on April 03 at the National Stadium in Karachi.
