Went to Hindi tuition with my kids to get better at commentary: VVS Laxman

Former India batsman VVS Laxman said he took up commentary after retirement to get out of his comfort zone and share knowledge with young viewers.

VVS Laxman said he had a word with an executive from the broadcasters and understood the importance of Hindi commentary to viewers in the country. The batting great said although he spoke Hindi during his growing up days in Hyderabad, picking up the language for commentary was a big challenge.

Laxman, who retired from international cricket in 2012, has been an active commentator in the recent past. The 45-year-old has been part of both England and Hindi commentary units, predominantly during home seasons.

“It’s still a work in progress. I am working hard to get better (at Hindi commentary). I learned that throughout my playing days. Whatever you do, should become your passion. Now commentary has become my passion. I am lucky to be involved with the game. I thank Star Sports for giving me the opportunity. I had an interaction with Sanjog of Star Sports. He mentioned to me how important the Hindi language is for the viewers. That did not come naturally to me,” VVS Laxman said during the latest episode of ‘India Today Inspiration’.

“Although I grew up in Hyderabad taking Hindi, the Hyderabadi Hindi is totally different from what the viewers would like to listen to when you are commentating. It was tough for me.

“There were 2 options — either I don’t do that or I continue to work hard and improve. I wanted to be part of this medium because it was a great medium where I can express my views and share my knowledge with the young viewers.
