Why Yasir Shah signalled ‘seven’ after dismissing Steve Smith

Written by Abhishek Patil

On a wicket where Australian batsmen have dominated the proceedings against Pakistan bowlers, Steve Smith registered a single-digit score at the Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday. Smith got out trying to whip Yasir Shah’s fuller delivery towards the leg side after getting off the mark with a boundary in the same over. As Smith walked back to the dressing room, dejected at his poor shot selection, the leg spinner celebrated his second wicket of the match signalling ‘seven’ as his teammates joined him.

The 33-year-old signalled ‘seven’ after dismissing Smith for the seventh time in Test cricket in six matches. This was the seventh time in six Test Shah has got the better of Smith.

The former Australian skipper was not a part of the Test series against Pakistan in 2018 as he was banned for a year by Cricket Australia for his involvement in ball-tampering.

Only Stuart Broad has got Smith out on more occasions than Shah. Broad has dismissed the Sydney-born cricketer eight times in 24 Tests he has played against him.
