Sourav Ganguly very passionate about Delhi Capitals, says Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly were fierce rivals during their cricketing careers. But in 2019, Ganguly and Ponting become pals as they were named in the coaching staff for Delhi Capitals’ (DC) side for season 12 of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Ponting retained his position as head coach, Ganguly was named advisor of the DC squad this year.

Ponting was recently asked about the 18-year-old incident in Kolkata where Ganguly made Steve Waugh wait for several minutes for the toss at the Eden Gardens. But the former World Cup-winning captain chose to not comment on the incident and rather went on to praise Ganguly.

“18 years is a long time ago. It makes me realise how old I am these days!”

“The last month sharing the dugout and meetings and things with Sourav has been a lot of fun.

“I am sure he said the same thing. We have got very similar ideas and views on the game which has made us work well together. We have always going on well since our playing days. Since we have retired, we have caught up a couple of times a year at least.”

“I’ve always enjoyed his company. I think all the boys have enjoyed it as well. He is very passionate about Delhi Capitals and the success that we are hoping to bring to the team. So we are working well together.”

Now Delhi play Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Friday as they look to maintain their solid start to the season where they have 3 wins from 6 matches. Ponting believes that the side can still improve in their performances to qualify for their first playoff place in 5 years.

“We have got off to a solid start, we haven’t been brilliant yet but I think we have got some brilliant cricket to play and hopefully we will see that in next couple of weeks,” Ponting concluded.
