Shreyas Iyer should bat at number four, opines Ricky Ponting

Now Australian cricket team’s assistant coach and Indian Premier League outfit Delhi Capital’s mentor, Ricky Ponting has given his take on the ongoing No. 4 debate for team india.

The former Australian skipper said the Indian team management could have tried Shreyas Iyer in that position after the recent failures of Rayudu and Pant. Ponting further praised Iyer by saying his record in the domestic season speaks for himself and added that he is excited to meet him for the impending IPL season. However, as Iyer is more or less out of contention for a World Cup berth in the Indian side, Ponting said that the Indian team management can fit Rahul in that spot.

“They tried a few even during the recent Australia series. Rayudu was there, Rishabh, Shankar. They could have also have tried Shreyas Iyer. He is a very good player. He has had a great domestic season. I am excited to catch up with him. It’s an interesting conundrum; maybe, they can fit in KL Rahul in that spot,” said Ponting in an interview with Cricbuzz.

The IPL 2019 season is all set to kickstart from March 23 onwards with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the high-profile tournament opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Whereas, Ponting’s Delhi Capitals play their first match against Mumbai Indians on March 24 in Mumbai.
