Written by N Krishnamurthy

In a bid to resurrect national team’s performance in the upcoming World Cup, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has decided to conduct a super provincial tournament before finalizing the squad for the global Mega show, Cricket Age reliably learns.

The World Cup will be held in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14, 2019. featuring ten teams.

Accordingly, SLC has decided to conduct the super provincial tournament from April 4 to April 11.

“The idea is to play all the national and domestic performers in the tournament, who are in the contention for the World Cup. The World Cup squad to be picked only after the conclusion of the tournament, so selectors will have a fair idea about the world cup squad” a top SLC Official told Cricket Age.

The another motive behind organising the super provincial tournament is to get the real picture of players fitness.

“Some of the players have hidden their injuries in the past and the National team had to pay price for this. So, for the World Cup, only those players will be selected who are fully fit and are not carrying injuries” the top official added further.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set 23rd April as the deadline to announce world cup squad.
