IPL 2019: Blow for Mumbai Indians as Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested ahead of World Cup

Indian captain Virat Kohli had recently expressed his desire to have the key pacers rested in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 season ahead of the World Cup in England. It seems that the BCCI is set to follow the skipper’s wish and speak to the franchises about the same.

“For someone of Virat’s stature, he can take a call himself and discuss with his franchise about his workload. However, for Bumrah, the Indian team’s support staff will need to prepare all the relevant data so that we can have a discussion with MI if the situation arises,” a BCCI official told PTI.

“Obviously, if he is fit, he will play all important matches for MI but in between, with such a hectic travel schedule during IPL, it will be great if he is rested keeping the World Cup in mind,” the official further added.

Soon after Kohli had expressed the desire to have the key pacers rested in the 2019 IPL season, MI captain Rohit Sharma differed with his opinion, saying he cannot afford to rest Bumrah if Mumbai reach the IPL playoffs.

Even former skipper MS Dhoni had recently cited IPL as the right platform to get the players prepared for the World Cup, while also agreeing that it’s important to manage the workload of the players properly.

After India’s win over Australia in the 3rd Test at Melbourne, Kohli had lauded Bumrah as the best bowler in the world after he bagged 9 wickets in two innings to give the tourists a 2-1 lead in the 4-match series.
