Is Graeme Labrooy A SL Chief Selector Only For New Zealand Tours?

Written by N Krishnamurthy

Graeme Labrooy, the controversial and clueless chief selector of Sri Lanka cricket, is fast becoming a selector only for the New Zealand tours. In last two years, he has seldom watched even national team’s matches, as he has always been busy in fulfilling his duty as ICC regional match referee and also is a very successful insurance broker. Due to this multitasking, he was never able to watch even Colombo matches of his national team.

On Friday as well, when Sri Lanka succumbed to a embarrassing defeat by 211 runs in Galle test against England, Labrooy was busy in performing his duty as match referee in the ongoing Women’s World Cup in West Indies.

However, for Sri Lanka’s upcoming New Zealand tour, Labrooy has already confirmed his availability. When Cricket Age inquired, it learnt that Labrooy’s son studies in New Zealand. Thus, he always prefers to go to New Zealand on SLC perks, to spend time with his son. During the U19 world cup in the January this year also, Labrooy stayed with the team in New Zealand and at the same time, Sri Lanka national team was playing a series in Bangladesh!

In another joke, Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha has included Labrooy in the recently announced so called Cricket advisory committee, even after knowing the fact that he has turned a complete disaster in his main job. The hilarious part is that along with Labrooy, head coach Chandika Hathurasingha, CEO Ashley De Silva and COO Jerome Jayarathne have also been included in the committee, even though all they are not doing the justice with their main Responsibilities.

It is noteworthy that few days ago, Labrooy manipulated things at ICC and managed to convince some third grade officials to release a media statement on his favour, stating that the cricket governing body has no issue with his multitasking. The fact is that, it is not the ICC, but the Sri Lanka Cricket, who is suffering with Labrooy’s preferring his ICC duty.
