Sri Lanka Removed Angelo Mathews As Shorter Formats Captain

Written by N Krishnamurthy

Sri Lanka selectors have removed Angelo Mathews as shorter formats captain with immediate effect after an embarrassing Asia Cup campaign, where the team knocked out with heavy defeats against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Dinesh Chandimal has been appointed the captain replacing Mathews.

“The National Selectors on Sunday ( 23rd September, 2018) decided to appoint Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain to lead the team in the upcoming England series.

Accordingly, they have requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the National ODI & T20I captain, with immediate effect” Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) said in a statement.

Chandimal, who is already Sri Lanka’s Test captain, has skippered his country in seven ODIs previously, winning five and losing two. Mathews, who was reinstated to the 50-over and T20I captaincy in January, led Sri Lanka in 106 ODIs, winning 49 and losing 51, with one tie and five no results.

The five-match ODI series against the side currently sitting at No.1 in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings begins in Dambulla on 10 October.
