Steve Smith Out Of Action With Side Strain

Written by Vishwas Gupta

Steve Smith will be off the field till at least the end of the Caribbean Premier League 2018 after suffering a side strain.

At the toss prior to his team Barbados Tridents’ game against St Lucia Stars, Jason Holder, the team captain, said Smith had an abdominal strain. It was later confirmed by Robin Singh, the team coach, that Smith had a side strain, and had returned home to Australia to treat the injury.

St Lucia were playing their last match of the tournament – and winning, but only finishing with seven points from 10 games – and while Barbados are not yet done with their commitments, they are down at the bottom of the table at the moment with four points from eight games.

Smith signed up with Barbados as a replacement for Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, having become available to play in the CPL for the first time following his 12-month suspension for ball tampering.

He showed decent form, hitting a half-century and a couple of 40s, and even returning 2/19 in the game he scored 63 in, against Jamaica Tallawahs, in a Player of the Match award-winning performance.

Barbados next play St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on 4 September and then Trinbago Knight Riders on 7 September.
