SLC to announce Shorter Formats Captain On January 9

Written by Abhishek Patil

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will announce its limited over captain on the 09th January, 2018.
This was decided following a discussion held yesterday (03rd January, 2018) at Sri Lanka Cricket, over the appointment of a white-ball captain to lead the Sri Lankan side into the future.

Thilanga Sumathipala, President, K. Mathivanan, Vice President, In-charge of International Cricket, Ashley De Silva, CEO, Graeme Labrooy, Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka Cricket Manager and Chandika Hathurusinghe, the Head Coach of the team was present at the meeting.

“During the discussion, the Chairman of selectors informed me that they are considering appointing either Anjelo Mathews or Dinesh Chandimal to fill the role.” said Thilanga Sumathipala, President of SLC.

According to sources, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews are the front runners to take over Sri Lanka ODI captaincy for the Bangladesh tri-series as the SLC has decided to dumped Thisara Perera just after one series that to against India.

Thisara was the captain of the team for the three match series against India recently. Sri Lanka lost the series 2-1, but the captaincy of Perera was impressive. They surprised team India in the first ODI at Dharamsala by comprehensively beaten them.

However, as Chandika Hathurusingha has taken over as New Head coach of the team, the change was almost inevitable.

According to sources, Hathurusingha is on the favour of Chandimal, even though his recent ODI form is nothing more than a disaster.

That’s why, the name of Mathews has been resurfaced on again, after the mutual understanding between Hathurusingha and selectors.

Mathews at present is recovering from a hamstring injury, that he sustained during the second T20I against India. He resigned as captain across all formats following Sri Lanka’s 2-3 series loss to Zimbabwe in July last year.
