Overview: ODI stastics between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

Just 5 days left to start the Sri Lanka Vs Bangladesh ODI series and let’s now look at the statistics. Hope Die hard Cricket lovers are interested in stats :

The following relates to the 6 bilateral series that was held over the years between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has played 6 bilateral series over the years and no surprises who the winner is. Sri Lanka won 5 series while the other one was shared between the two teams. A total of 18 matches were played in bilateral series by the two Nations and Sri Lanka claimed the victory in 15 of them while 2 were won by Bangladesh and one ended up in a draw.

First series – The first match played in a bilateral series by the two south Asians were in 2002 in SSC where the Lankans won the match by 5 wickets with 31 balls to spare. Bangladesh scored 226 in 50 overs while Tushar Imran and Captain Mashud scored 61 and 54 respectively. The hosts had no issues when chasing the target and chased it down in 44.5 overs. Marvan Atapattu top scored with 83 and was named man of the match. Sri Lanka won the other two ODI’s by 8 wickets and 58 runs respectively and clinched the series 3 – 0. Atapattu ended as the highest runs scorer of the series with 134 runs to his name in 3 matches, the highest runs scorer for Bangladesh and the 2nd on the list was the skipper Khaled Mashud who scored 106 runs in 3 outings. No surprises who the highest wicket taker was. It was Murali with 6 and Hasantha Fernando who played his debut series came in 2nd with 5 to his name. It was pretty startling to see Khaled Mahmud being name as the man of the series; he claimed 5 wickets in the series and he scored 48 runs in 3 matches.

Their 2nd series took place in 2005 and this time too Bangladesh were the visitors all three matches were played in Colombo and they didn’t have any attainment like the last time, they lost the series once again 3 -0. The hosts won the first encounter by 88 runs the 2nd battle by 75 runs and the last ODI by 6 wickets with 148 balls remaining. This time the most number of runs in the series came from the bat of rookie Upul Tharanga who was just 20 at the time, he showcased his flairs and scored 174 runs in 3 matches, it was only his 2nd series after making the debut in the Indian Oil cup.

Tharanga played his 4th, 5th and 6th ODI against the Tigers and in his 4th ODI he scored a vivid 60 off 80 balls which was his maiden 50 and he bettered it in the next match when he scored a brisk 105 off 110 balls which was only his 5th Match and he brought up his maiden century too and the player of the match award. His 174 runs in this 3 match series also made him the Player of the series for the very first time in only his 2nd ODI series. It was a big achievement for a 20 year old kid.

Shahria Nafees was the highest runs scorer for Bangladesh and the 2nd in the list with 111 runs and the only other Batsmen to pass the 100 runs mark was Atapattu with 108. Maharoof become the highest Wicket taker with 6, he and Dilshan bagged 6 wickets while the highest for Bangladesh was their opening facer Syed Rasel

The 3rd series was a special one, a very special one for the Tigers. Lion is the King in the Jungle but this time around the Tiger was able to stand above the Lion even for once. Yes, it was in this series that they brought their first win in a bilateral series against the Lankans, and this was the first time that Sri Lanka toured to Bangladesh. The first two matches where played in Bogra while the final ODI was played in Chittagong. Sri Lanka won the series as usual but this time not 3 -0, they lost the 2nd ODI. It was also in this series that Jehan Mubrak played as an Opener but it proved to be a fruitless move by the Lankans.

Sri Lanka won the 1st ODI by 5 wickets with 155 balls remaining. Sangakkara top scored with 50 while chasing and Ruchira Perera who bagged 3 wickets for 30 runs was the Man of the Match.

This was also the Final ODI of Khaled Mahamud; the bowling all-rounder of Bangladesh. He ended his career after playing 77 ODI’s and scoring 991 runs and claiming 67 wickets. He signed off with a gutsy 36 which rescued his side from discomfiture, leaving the field to a standing ovation from a capacity crowd.

It was in the 2nd ODI that the tigers chased down the Lions successfully. Sri Lanka made 212 for 7 while all the other failed the master blaster made a well compiled 96. The Tigers were up to the task and they chased down the total in 47 overs with only 6 wickets down. Young 21 year old Ashraful made a well-timed 51 and Aftab Ahmed played a little cameo of 32 which helped their team to clinch victory. Aftab was also the Man of the Match for his 32 off 21 balls and 1 for 24 with the ball in hand.

Sri Lanka recoiled back well in the all-important 3rd ODI. Since Mubarak failed in the first two ODI’s the Lankans brought in Tharanga but he too didn’t trouble scorers at all, in fact both the openers didn’t trouble much. Sri Lanka reached 309 for 7 thanks to Sangakkara’s 109, Kaushal Lokuarachchi who was a good all-rounder at that time made a quick 69 and Captain Jayawardena scored 51. Bangladesh could only manage 231 runs and they handed over a victory of 78 runs. Sangakkara was both the Man of the Match and Man of the series.

Sangakkara was the highest runs scorer of the series with 182 runs with a hundred and a fifty to his name, Ashraful was the 2nd in the list and the highest runs scorer for the Tigers with 119. Sri Lankans didn’t have much luck with the bowl. Mohammed Rafique was the highest with 7, followed by Rasel with 5 and the highest for the Lions was Dilhara with 4.

4th series was once again played in Sri Lanka in 2007 and once again they won it 3 – 0. Once again all three matches were played in Colombo. Sri Lanka won the first ODI after scoring a mere 234. Chamara Silva top scored with 65 and followed by Tharanga with 57. Bangladesh could only manage 164 in 40.3 overs. Shahriar Nafees top scored with 33 and Mr No- ball Dilhara bagged 4 wickets for 24 runs to earn himself a man of the match award.

Sri Lanka won the 2nd ODI easily by 5 wickets with 113 balls to spare. Banga boys could only manage a mere 137. Aftab top scored with 47 while all the others fell way too early. The left arm of Sanath did spin charmingly for him to claim 4 wickets for 31 runs. The Lankans chased down the target in just 31.1 overs once again Chamara Silva top scoring with 36. Sanath was the Man of the match for his 4 wickets and 24 with the bat. It was in this Match that Sanath took his 300th ODI Wicket.

The 3rd match was a special one for Mubarak since he scored his 3rd ODI 50. The match was reduced to 40 overs per side due to rain and the Lions scored 196 with the only Washington DC born international Cricketer top scoring with 72 off 105 balls. One of their all time best spinners Abdur Razzak took 3 wickets for 47 runs and then the Lankans restricted the Tigers to 157, only young Iqbal scored 54. This was the Match that Mahamudullah made he ODI debut and he indeed had a good outing scoring 36 with the bat and claiming 2 for 28 runs. Once again Sanath bettered his bowling from the 3rd ODI with 4 wickets for 14 runs. Mubarak was the Man of the Match.

Chamara Silva was the highest runs scorer with 101 to his name in just 2 matches and no other batsmen reached 3 figures in the series. Sanath was the highest wicket taker of the series claiming 9 wickets. He was also the man of the series with 9 wickets and 53 runs in the series.

5th series was played in Sri Lanka in 2013. Hanbanthota and Pallekele were the venues for the 3 ODI’s. For the first time the series was shared 1 – 1 with the 2nd ODI being washed out.

Sri Lanka won the first ODI by 8 Wickets with 32 balls reaming. Batting first the Tigers made 259 for 8 thanks to a brilliant century by Iqbal, who scored 112 off 136 balls, it was his 4th ODI Ton, it was the first Century by a Bangladeshi batsmen in Sri Lanka and in a bilateral series and well supported by Nasir Hossain who scored 73 from 59 balls. Sri Lanka got an adjusted target of 238 from 41 overs due to rain and the Lankans had no troubles what so ever in chasing it down. Dilshan added 106 for the 1st wicket with KJP and a further 128 runs for the 2nd Wicket with Sangakkara. Dilshan played a very charismatic innings at the top; 113 off 108 balls and brought his 15th ODI ton he was also named man of the match and the Lions chased the target in just 35.4 overs with only 2 wickets down.

2nd ODI was washed out due to rain and the Tigers chased down the lions successfully and hunted them down in the 3rd ODI. Who would have thought that Sri Lanka would lose after scoring 302. This time too Dilshan made an impressive 125 off 128; his 16th Ton, he showed that he was in red hot form. He and KJP once again added a century opening partnership of 116. And ‘Podi Sanath scored 56 with Chokshanada scoring 48, Abdur Razzak claimed 5 wickets for 62 runs, which is the best ever figures by a Bangladeshi bowler. Rain once again played hide and seek with Sri Lanka and the target was revised to 183 off 27 overs which Bangladesh chased down in 26 overs. Dilshan was both the Man of the man and the Man of the series.

TM Dilshan was the highest runs scorer of the series with 248 runs in 3 outings and 2 centuries, and is average read 248 as well. Abdur Razzak topped with 5 wickets while Mathews came in 2nd with 4. Dilshan’s brilliant batting made him the man of the series

6th and the final series took place in Bangladesh and Dhaka was the venue for all the three matches. All the matches were played in the month of valentines in 2014. Sri Lanka won the series 3 – 0 and ensured that still the Lion is stronger than the Tiger.

The 1st Match was simply a brilliant encounter. Sri Lanka fought back immensely to win from an unlikely position of 67 for 8. Sri Lanka batted first in the Shere Bangla National Stadium in a match that was reduced to 43 overs. They ended up on 180 in 40 overs. The final total would have looked worse since Sri Lanka was tattering at one stage when the scoreboard read 8 for just 67 runs in 21.3 overs. Big Panda and SMS added 82 for the 9th wicket and then Panda and the Rathgama expresses added 31 for the last Wicket and Mali’s contribution was 0.

Chasing 183 in 43 overs Bangladeshi boys got off to a great start even though a wicket fell in the 2nd ball of the innings, they were at one stage 1 for 79, needing just 101 off 170 balls with 9 wickets in hand and then a miracle did happen. Mathews and SMS bowled in tandem and did put the brakes on scoring and they continued to pick wickets. Tigers could only Manage 167 in 39.2 overs, this handed a victory of 13 runs to Sri Lanka. Shamsur Rahman top scored with 62 and Mominul and Captain Rahim chipped in with 44 and 27 respectively. Mathews took 3 for 21 runs and two by Jonty for 33. Big Thisara Panda was the man of the match with 80 off 54 balls and 1 for 35.

Sri Lanka ensured that there were no drams in the 2nd ODI. This time they scored 289 for 6.after winning the toss and batting first. Sangakkara showed his class again with a 115 ball 128 to his name, He went past a 1000 runs against Bangladesh in the course of this innings and well backed up by impressive yet Forgotten Ashan Priyanjan who scored 60 off 97 balls and brought his 2nd ODI half century after scoring one in his debut, Mathews added the finishing touches with 56 off 39 balls. Bangladesh started the chase and fell short by 61 runs, they were all out for 228 runs in 43 overs, only Rahim showed some resistance with 79. Sangakkara was the named the man of the Match

‘Sri Lanka… 22 million hearts, 22 million cricket lovers, 10 heroes, one question… why Chandimal?’ This was asked by a fan after Chandimal failing again and it was not his good days in the field with the bat in hand.

In the 3rd ODI kusal Perera’s matured century ensured that Sri Lanka chased down 240 with only 4 wickets down. Bangladesh batted first and made 240 for 8, the short boy Mominul once again stood tall and scored 60 off 60, and angry bird bagged 3 wickets for 43 balls. Sri Lanka chased down the target in 47.3 overs thanks to a calm and steady 106 off 124 balls by KP and Chandimal answered his critics well with a 70 ball 64. Kusal was also the Man of the match.

Sangakkara and Rahim were the joint highest scorers with 136 each and Rubel was the leading wicket taker with 7. Surprisingly it was Sachithra who was named man of the series with 5 wickets and 30 runs in the series

 

 

The following are the overall statistics of Sri Lanka Vs Bangladesh ODI’s. Let the numbers game begin

38 ODI’s the total number of ODI’s played between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh from 1986 to 2015. Sri Lanka has won 33, while Bangladesh with 4 and 1 match was a draw.

357 the highest team total between the two teams, this was made by Sri Lanka in 25th June 2008 in Lahore in the Asia cup. Sangakkara scored 101 and Kapugedara chipped in with 74. Bangladesh has never pass 300, their highest score is 265 for 9

76 which is made by Bangladesh in 2002 August 5th is the lowest team total between the two sides. Lowest made by Sri Lanka is 147 in 2009 at Dhaka.

1206 runs is the most runs made by a batsmen in all the matches between the two sides. Sangakkara scored this in 31 matches. Highest by a Bangladeshi is 573 in 26 matches by Mohammed Ashraful.

161 the highest individual score by a batsmen. Dilshan achieved this in the recently concluded world cup. 161* off 146 balls. Highest by a Bangladeshi is 112 by Tamin in 2013 at Hambantota.

5 the most number of hundreds by a player between the two nations. Sangakkara once again leads the list followed by 4 each by Dilshan and Sanath, 3 by Tharanga and 1 each by Kusal Perera, Tamin and Jayawardena.

11 the most number of fifties by a player between the two nations. No surprises who it is, its super sanga and the highest by a Bangladesh player is 4 by Tamin.

248 is the most runs scored in a tournament by a batsmen in a series. Dilshan owns it in the 2012 series. The highest for a Bangladeshi is 136 by Rahim in the 2013 series.

31 the highest number of wickets by a bowler. It’s that man Murali in 17 matches. Abdur Razzak leads the way for Bangladesh with 19 from 15 matches.

6 for 25 the best bowling figures by a bowler between the two south Asians. Chaminda Vaas in that 2003 world cup match where he also took 4 wickets in the first over in Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. Razzak is the only bowler to take 5 wickets in an innings for Bangladesh. His figures read 5 for 62 this was in 2013 in Pallekele.

86 the most number of runs conceded in an innings. It was against Abdur Razzak. In the 2007 World cup match in Port of Spain his left arm went for 86 in 10 overs. Highest conceded by a Sri Lanka is 67 runs in 2010 by Thilan Thushara

49 dismissals the most by any player between the two sides. Kumar Sangakkara with 43 catches and 6 stumping’s lead the way followed by Rahim with 16 catches and 2 stumping’s a total of 18 dismissals in 20 matches

36 the most number of extras conceded in an innings, this is by Banga boys in 2006 in Mohali and Sri Lanka has conceded 28 in 2005 in Colombo

3 the highest number of ducks by a player. Rubel Hossain leads the way and the Highest by a Sri Lankan is 2 by Kulasekara, Tharanga and Mahela

198 runs the largest victory, which is also by Sri Lanka in the 2007 World Cup game in Port of Spain. By wickets it’s by 10 wickets by Sri Lanka in the 2003 World Cup match.
