Dwayne Smith : a gifted batsman, who could achieve greater heights!

Written by Pushpendra Albe

Dwayne Smith, the West Indian all-rounder has announced his retirement, after almost 14 years of playing international cricket. A dashing right-handed opening batsman, he was very effective particularly in shorter formats of the game. Well known for his big hitting power, currently he is contracted to teams in the IPL, the Big Bash League, and even the NatWest t20 blast.

Smith announced his arrival in the international cricket in his debut, against South Africa in 2004, when he blasted a sparkling hundred in the newlands test. He became an integral part of the side as an opener as well, something that was quite clearly a position that was tailor-made for him. Though, he couldn’t replicate his first match success in longer term in test cricket, he had a far more successful ODI and T20I career with both bat and ball.

He was also a handy medium pace bowler with the odd uncanny off-cutters and ability to take wickets with reverse swing as well.

Though, all his gifted talent, with both bat and ball, one can feel he couldn’t do full justice with his capabilites. world cricket will remember him as a batsman, who could achieve greater heights.
